47% of Americans Still Believe Outright Lies
posted by Ben

What the Public Believes Now, According to Latest Harris Poll:
# 47 percent believe that Saddam Hussein helped plan and support the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001 (up six percentage points from November).
# 44 percent actually believe that several of the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11 were Iraqis (up significantly from 37% in November).
# 36 percent believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. invaded (down slightly from 38% in November)"
People don't believe these lies for no reason. They believe them because that's what the right-wing spin machine keeps telling them, even when the irrefutable facts force King George himself to admit otherwise! Folks. The president himself says that this isn't true. Who are you going to believe, him or O'Reilly?

I know that with all the discussion of framing taking place right now, it's been shown that having the facts on one's side simply isn't enough to reach these deluded 47%. Understandably, it's easier to believe something untrue than admit you've been duped.

So here's the question for the comments: How would you talk to somebody who believed that any of the above items were true in a way that was respectful, honored them and their ideals, yet made it crystal clear that at least in this regard, they were verifiably wrong?

Or should we just throw in the towel now and wait for the inevitable environmental and nuclear holocaust?
