Understanding the Past
posted by Ben

You know, I'm posting a lot of way-out stuff here. I guess it's because I enjoy imagining what might have been more than I enjoy the official (and usually accurate?) versions. It's like there's this whole other, alternate history of the past out there, despite our collective, unconscious decision to accept what we generally believe. It makes me wonder how little of our understanding of our past is really based on fact at all. If I wanted the low blow, I could cite the number of Americans who still believe that Iraq was behind 9/11, which even Bush has had to admit isn't true. (Of course, he then went on to suggest shock at the notion that he might have ever implied otherwise.) Goodbye documented past, hello made-up past. Maybe there's something to this collective view of history, regardless of what ever actually happened.

Either that, or everything that the authorities tell us is true. Remember now, you'd better believe that one, or you're unAmerican.
